Today marks the formal end of the POLARIS project. We have successfully constructed both a tape manufacturing line at Coventive Composites and a tank production line at MFTech. Results from Plastic Omnium on the quality of the tanks look promising and further evaluations by their customers will now take place.

Plastic Omnium begins the full evaluation of the tanks produced by MFTech, using tape supplied by Coventive Composites. The examination will include burst and drop tests.

After nearly 3 months, Plastic Omnium and MFTech reopen their businesses after shutdowns due to COVID-19. Special precautions have now been put in place to help contain the spread of the virus within each organisation.

The Polaris project had previously announced that project partners Composites Evolution, Plastic Omnium and MFTech SARL would be exhibiting at JEC World 2020, however JEC has announced today that the exhibition will now take place on 9th-11th March 2021, beyond the end of the project. Both Plastic Omnium and MFTech have been forced to temporarily close due to the impact of government restriction. It is expected that both organisations will reopen in June 2020. As a result the project has been granted a 3 month extension by the European Commission. The new project end date is now 31 October 2020.

MFTech have performed the first tank manufacturing trials using the industrial scale tank-winding equipment developed at their site in Argentan, France. Tanks will now be produced in order to check the design concepts for their manufacture.

Plastic Omnium (Levallois, France) has recently won a significant order from a German manufacturer for the development of 350-bar hydrogen tanks. The contract signed for bus equipment is the largest project in Europe at this time for this type of vehicle.

Plastic Omnium has just obtained its first certification for a 700-bar hydrogen storage tank designed to equip passenger cars. The R134 certification is an international standard comprising the strictest specifications for the regulation of high-pressure hydrogen tanks. Coventive Composites, together with Plastic Omnium and MFTech have been awarded H2020 funding by the European Commission under the project title “Lighter, Cheaper Thermoplastic CNG Tanks for Automotive & Commercial Vehicle Markets”.
